Common Moving Blunders

Common Moving BlundersThe process of moving to a new home can be a big job, and as such, there are ample opportunities to make mistakes along the way. If you are moving for the first time, it is important to know about some of the moving blunders that many people make on a regular basis. Here are some of the common mistakes that you may want to avoid when moving.

Failing to Check Out the Moving Company

Far too many people who are about to move choose a moving company at random from the phone book. They look in the phone book and decide which moving company they like based on the quality of their ad. If you want to hire the best moving company, you're going to have to do a little bit of homework on the front end. Ask around to people in your area to see what they have to say about local movers. Check online to read some reviews about moving companies as well.

Ignoring Free Resources

Another mistake that many people make is failing to take advantage of free resources that are easily available to them. For example, when you move, you're going to need some packing supplies. In many cases, you can get free boxes from grocery stores or retail merchants who are throwing them out. You may also be able to ask your friends and family members who have moved recently if they have an extra boxes lying around. In some cases, you can even find people selling boxes in the classified section of the newspaper.

Besides free boxes, you may also be able to get some free newspapers. Many people throw out newspapers when they are done with them, and you could use these as packing materials to keep your things safe.

Using the Wrong Box

When packing up your things, it is also good idea to make sure that you have the right items in the right boxes. Many people make the mistake of putting heavy things into large boxes. If you put something heavy into a big box, it is likely to break out through the bottom when you're carrying it.

Not Checking the Clearance

Another common mistake that many people make when moving is failing to check the clearance on the doors of their new home. If you have a big piece of furniture that needs to move from your old house to your new house, you need to make sure that the doors are big enough to allow it to come in. Otherwise, you're going to end up with a big piece of furniture that you cannot get into your house. Spend a little bit of time measuring the entrance ways to your old house and your new house.

Forgetting to Forward Your Mail

When you move, you also need to make sure that you contact the post office to forward any of your mail to your new address. When you receive mail to the post office, it can be forwarded to your new house right away. This will help ensure that you get all of your important bills and other documents.

If you will keep these things in mind, you should be able to decrease the odds of making mistakes while you move. This will help you enjoy a much smoother transition.
