The Right Moving Company for You
Doing careful research to select a moving company can result in lower cost, better service, and comprehensive attention to your unique needs during relocation. Even if your employer is paying for move-related services, careful selection of a moving company can be key to a stress-free move.
Determine the following in advance of scheduling estimates:
- Overall moving inventory, including valuables and breakables
- What services will be required, such as pack and unpack
- What dates you will vacate your old home and move into your new home, and if storage will be required
Moving companies will send a representative to your home to assess your move. Questions you can ask them include:
- What insurance is included, and what it specifically covers
- What damage insurance is included
- How will your belongings be transported, and what storage can be provided if needed
- What items should travel with you, instead of with the movers
- What is the allowable over-charge amount
Be sure to obtain at least three estimates from three different moving companies. The most expensive estimate does not always indicate the highest level of service, or the set of services that is most compatible with your needs.
Completed moving estimates should include:
- Overall time involved
- Mileage
- Total number of rooms
- Necessary supplies, such as specialty cartons and filler paper
- Services you will require
- Storage, if needed
Quotes that merely provide a per hour rate cannot be compared to estimates that present an overview of what will be provided, and do not provide you with a sense of actual cost.
Also, be sure the quote includes a clause which lists their liability in terms of over-charging. While it is typical that a final invoice can not be ten percent more than an estimate, it is very important to consult your local legislation for specific information.
