Do moving companies need a license to operate?

Answer:

For Long Distance moves, the mover needs to have a license from the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), which is the governing body for Interstate (Long Distance) moves. Local moves are a little more complicated because they are governed by the state the move us happening in, and some states have more stringent rules than other states. For example, a Local move in California will require the mover to have a license issued by the CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission), but if the Local move is happening in Arizona, the mover is not required to have any license for an Intrastate (Local) move.
